School based programs

At Rio Tinto Iron Ore, we passionately champion school-based programs because we believe in nurturing the potential of future generations. These programs not only foster academic excellence but also encourage creativity, teamwork and a sense of community. We view education as a cornerstone for building a brighter future, and our commitment to school-based initiatives reflects our belief in empowering young minds to discover their full potential.

These opportunities are offered in our regional locations only.

Education partnerships

Rio Tino is committed to being an impactful information provider to schools, parents and students to ensure all parties have access to relevant information, opportunities and guidance, empowering them to make informed choices about their career pathways into mining.

School work experience

Our program gives you an opportunity to try out a mining career you’ve been considering before you make your big decision. You will get a chance to try out skills, tour the workplace and see what working at Rio Tinto is really like.

Pre Apprenticeships in Schools (PAiS)

Pre-apprenticeships in schools are certificate II programs approved by industry. They give students in years 11 and 12 the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills for entry into an apprenticeship when they leave school. As a pre-apprentice you will attend school, do your training at a TAFE or private training provider and complete some unpaid work with an employer in your chosen industry.

School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs)

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs) provide an opportunity for you to work with an employer and train in a qualification while you are still at school.

When you do a SBAT, you will work and train on the job with your employer and may also train at a RTO for one or two days a week, spending the other days at school completing your Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
